San Jose, California
Castle Rock State Park
Castle Rock State Park encompasses over 5,200 acres. The beautifuly maintained trails bring you to spectacular views of Monterey Bay, Big Basin, and the Pacific Ocean. We pass waterfalls as well as sandstone monuments the size of townhouse complexes.
From San Jose, take Highway 17 south towards Santa Cruz. Turn off at Lexington Dam on to Bear Creek Road. At the stop sign, proceed straight, then take a left on to Black Road. Continue 3.8 miles to the stop sign on Highway 35 and take a right. Drive 3.6 miles to the Castle Rock parking lot on your left. Parking is $6.00 in the lot. Or save your money, park on the street right outside the lot, and toss it in the hat for the 7th tradition. Allow 20 minutes drive time from the turnoff on highway 17 to the Castle Rock parking lot.
We start from the parking lot on Highway 35 (Summit Road) on the Skyline to the Sea Trail and hike down to the campground for our meeting. Then we loop back on the Saratoga Gap Trail. This is a Level 2.5 hike. It is 5.81 miles with a 800' change in elevation.
Sorry, no dogs on State Park trails. (Flyer says dogs OK, but that is incorrect.) For more information contact your host, Tom D. Maps and park information can be found on the Trail Maps and Park Info webpage. And it's always good to check back on this webpage for last-minute updates.
